Orang National Park or Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, which is also known as the mini Kaziranga National Park, is located in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of the state of Assam at a distance of approx 100 km from the Kaziranga National Park. Spread over the area of around 79 sq km, the park is highly enriched in wildlife which consists of one-horned Rhino, tiger, elephant, leopard, deer, sambar and many others. The park is also famous for bird watching due to the presence of a large number of exotic migratory birds and domestic birds.
The Orang National Park has a history of multiple mixed pattern of habitation. The park was inhabited by the local ethnic group up to 1900. Due to an epidemic disease, the tribal population abandoned the area. Nevertheless, in the year of 1919 the British Government declared the whole area as Orang Game Reserve. And hence the Game Reserve directly under the control of the State Government Forest Department in order to fulfill all the requirement of Project Tiger of the National Parks. The Park got the full status of established wildlife sanctuary later in the year of 1985. But in 1992, it was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary but due to public agitation it was removed. Finally in the year of 1999, the sanctuary got the full status of National Park.
Geography of the Orang National Park
The Orang National Park is sprawl over an area of 78.81 square kilometers, lies on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. The park is encircled by Dhansiri River, Belsiri River and Pachnoi River. The park area becomes flood plains during monsoon season because of various streams overlapping each other. And these flood plains forms twelve wetlands inside the park. There 26 artificial water bodies giving evidence that this region was once an abode for a particular community. The whole area of the park is divided into Water body, Eastern Himalayan Moist Deciduous Forest, Eastern Wet Alluvial Grassland, Eastern Seasonal Swamp Forest, Savannah Grasslands, Degraded Grassland, Moist Sandy area and Dry Sandy area. An Ideal Time to visit Orang National Park The best time to visit Orang National Park is between the months of November to April.
By Air : The nearest airport to the park is Salonibari village in Tezpur which is 60 kilometers away from Orang National Park. Tezpur airport has an excellent connectivity via good roads.
By Rail : The nearest railheads to the Orang National Park are Saloni and Rangapara railway stations. One can access Orang National Park from these railway stations via private taxi/cab or auto rickshaws.
By Road : Orang National Park is well connected via good roads with major cities of country.
