Rhino Poaching Row: Another Rhino Found Dead in Kaziranga National Park, Horn Take Away

Kaziranga Update: Kaziranga forest department guards found the carcass of an adult Rhino inside the core area of Kaziranga National Park of Assam. The dead body of male Rhino was recovered on Monday at khora range of the national park.

According to local reports, it is believed that poachers took away the horn after killing the animal as it was missing from the rhino body. Five empty cartridges of 0.303 rifle is also recovered by the forest guards from the spot where the carcass of the rhino was found. It is a great matter of concern for the forest officials as there have been a rhino poaching incidents in Kaziranga National Park.

In the previous incidents took place in February this year, the first rhino poaching incident occurred at Agaratali range of Kaziranga National Park. In the first rhino poaching incident of 2019, a male adult rhino was killed brutally and its horn was taken away by poachers. Later, the dead body of the rhino was recovered by the forest department guards.

If we look back in the years 2013 and 2014, it saw 27 rhino poaching incidents, the figure declined in the following years to 17 in 2015 and 18 in 2016 which was hopeful for the forest department.

In the year 2017 and 2018, six rhino poaching cases were registered as reported in Northeast Now.

Kaziranga – UNESCO World Heritage site is home to at least 2,500 greater one-horned rhinos, the world’s largest population of the species, listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
