Kaziranga Tiger Reserve Becomes India’s First National Park to be Equipped with Satellite Phones

News update: Assam’s Kaziranga Tiger Reserve has now become the First Wildlife Sanctuary in India to have been equipped with satellite phones, forest officials said. State Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua handed over ten satellite phones to the forest guard of the Kaziranga National Park.

This measure have been taken to boost anti-poaching activity and this decision to provide satellite phones was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 27.

According to an official of the Kaziranga National Park this step would prevent rhino poaching activity in park and this will boost forest personnel in tracing them easily. They further said that the satellite phones will be used in Park’s six tourism zones with no wireless or poor mobile connectivity.

The state Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued the 10 satellite phones for the National Park at an estimated cost of Rs 16 lakh. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will be the service provider and the park authorities will bear the monthly expenses.
