First Time in 21 Years, Only 1 Rhino Poaching Case in Assam In 2021
Assam had only one case of rhino poaching in 2021. In 21years, this is the one with the lowest number of cases.
As per the status, the poachers killed one-horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park in April 2021. The skeleton of an adult male rhino was seen near Xilekhunda beel of Hanuman forest camp beneath Kohora range of Kaziranga National Park and the horn was not there.
Rhino Poaching Year to Year Status
- 2 killed in 2020
- 3 killed in 2019
- 7 killed in 2018
- 6 killed in 2017
- 18 killed in 2016
Also 17 were killed at other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in 2015.
In 2013 the rhino poaching cases were huge in Assam whereas in 2014, 27 rhinos were killed. Between 2000 and 2015, 153 rhinos were killed in the state.
Anti-Poaching Task Force was formed by the state government in 2021 with the aim to have a check on the census of rhino.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted It is indeed incredible to see the progress of rhino poaching is very less day by day. We lost one rhino only in 2021 so the upcoming year would be definitely the safest for rhino and there will not be any rhino poaching. The credit goes to the forest guard for keeping an eye on the forest.
