First Rhino Poaching Row Happened in Kaziranga National Park in 2022

This year the first female rhino was killed in Kaziranga National Park. This year has the first case of rhino poaching while last year the rhino was killed nine month ago. “This accident happened in the forest camp of Kohra range of the park on Wednesday: said Kaziranga National Park Field Director P. Shivkumar. 

The Assam government established the Anti-Poaching Task Force to curtail rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park and also in Tiger Reserve.

The park authorities said that the skeleton of the female rhino appears to be aged approximately 30 years. The carcass was brought into being by the forest staff of the Hilekhonda camp area within tall elephant grass.

Assam is currently having a roundabout 2,640 Indian one-horn rhino census. Assam had only a single case of rhino poaching last year which is the lowest one in 21 years.

The adult female rhino was killed brutally as her horn was removed by poachers and it is missing as well. This incident is more than 15 days old. The authority is taking major action against poachers and tracking is going on to chase the poachers through leaving sniffer dogs in the forest.  

Previous Year Status of Rhino Poaching Cases

As per the Assam government data, 1 rhino was killed in Kaziranga National Park in 2021, 2 in 2020, 3 in 2019, 7 in 2018 and 6 in 2017.

Rhino poaching in Assam was hitting the highest point in 2013 and 2014, with 27 rhinos poached every            year. 

17 one-horned rhinos were killed in 2015, 18 rhinos were killed in 2016. From 2000 to 2015, 153 rhinos were killed in the state, 37 rhinos were killed from 2016 to 2021.

Due to the Assam Forest Official strict action, the poaching of rhinos for their horn had severely decreased.
