About Majuli Island and its tourism
Majuli Island is a perfect gateway to a short escape from the daily hustle-bustle and is counted among the offbeat destinations in Assam. Majuli is the largest river island in the world on the Brahmaputra River in Assam. This is the first island in India to get the designation of a district in the year 2016 and UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. This Island is located on the point where the River Kherkutiya Xuti and the River Subansiri meet the River Brahmaputra. Majuli Island is also referred to as the hotspot of Assamese culture and neo-Vaishnavite culture.
The reverent Saint Srimanata Sankar Deva established 64 satras to flourish neo-Vaishnavism out of which 31 satras are left at present and the rest got eroded due to flood. Floods are quite common on the island and it caused erosion of a significant area of Majuli Island over the years. 25 satras function as monasteries to promote Vaishanvite culture and Sattriya dance. Visiting these satras is a major part of Majuli Island tourism. Each of these satras imparts distinguished lessons closely related to traditional Assamese culture.
Favourable time to visit – While planning for a visit to Majuli Island, avoid the monsoon and the summer season as the island receives heavy amounts of rainfall and an extremely hot and humid summer. Winter is the most favourable time of the year to visit Majuli Island.
Tribal communities – There are mainly two tribal communities residing on the island – the Deori Community and the Mising Community.
- The Deoria community is one of the four subcategories of the Chutiya community. Predominantly the community abides by patriarchal norms, where the father is the head of the family and the community worships Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Mising refers to a beautiful man. The primary food of the community’s people is rice. In order to maintain safety from floods the tribals build their homes 5-6 feet above the ground level. The tribal women are weaving experts.

Regarding food, you will not get anything fancy to eat or an exquisite range of dishes, like other tourist places. On the contrary, simple and ordinary but delicious food is available in Majuli.
