Rhino Killed by Poachers

Guwahati Update: In a recent incident that took place in the Kaziranga National Park in Assam a rhino was killed by poachers. This happens to be the very first incident of rhino poaching in Kaziranga this year. The poachers took away the horn after killing the rhino. The poaching of rhino inside the core area of the national park is very frequent now a days and it has created big concern for the conserving forest officials. This new incident of Rhino poaching happened under Sukani camp area of Agaratoli Range of the KNP on Friday night and the dead body was traced by the forest watchman on Saturday morning. They found carcass of an adult male rhino and the horn was missing from the carcass.

As reported in the local newspaper – a source in the Kaziranga national park informed the media that forest field staff heard sound of two consecutive gun shots at around 07:30 PM on Friday night from the direction where actually poaching took place. Perhaps it happened to be the first incident of rhino poaching inside the buffer area of the Kaziranga national park where poachers had killed six rhinos in the year of 2018.

According to forest authorities the anti-poaching Special Task Force (STF) personnel launched quick investigation inside the park with the help of two sniffer dogs. Senior forest officials including the Divisional Forest Officer and direction of the national park along with superintendent of police, Golaghat district rushed to the incident spot after recovery of the dead rhino.
